Today was the first day at my new job in Lewes.
It's thirty miles away, which is kind of harrowing, but the job does not require me to be in the office all the time. I'm providing ICT support for local schools that have bought into one of the organisation's service packages, so there furthest I might be travelling when "on a job" might be the other side of Battle, which isn't even ten miles from home.
There is a lot of reading to do, and a lot of common sense questionnaires to complete, before I can actually knuckle down to get some work done. I wouldn't mind so much, but most of it is stuff that will not affect the way I do my job. Still, I only have to go through it once.
It took all day to get network credentials though, so I was just twiddling my thumbs for most of the morning and afternoon. Apparently that process is one they are looking to restructure with some kind of new business initiative; I can see why.
I do get some gadgets as part of working in the place though. I've already been issued with a laptop, a PDA, and a desktop (even though I'll hardly be at a desk), as well as a keycard to get into certain parts of the main buildings. No secret underground server room keys yet though, but there is still time for that.
I have also been working on my kit for the Vikings. We're at Corfe Castle this coming bank holiday weekend, and I need to get my gear right as it is going to be the first public event I will be attend as a re-enacter. The only thing I have left to do is hide the fact that my cricket gloves are cricket gloves by wrapping them in leather. Not as easy as it sounds, and it's a fairly time-consuming process.
I'm really looking forward to it, but I know that I'm going to be absolutely dog tired come Tuesday morning.
And finally, Dwarf Fortress is awesome.
