I like my settings like I like my coffee; dark and gritty. Well actually I don't think that would be very nice. And I don't like coffee. So perhaps I like my settings like I don't like my coffee which I don't like... you get the idea.
This statement is related to my weekend activities. On Saturday I travelled to Eastbourne and found Phantasia with Nick. It was tiny compared to what I had expected. The floorboards were creaky, but not in the creepy old castle battlements kind of way. I asked about "Players/GMs wanted" but they don't have a cork board for RP groups to advertise on (shame). However, the clerk said he could put any ads I might have up in the window.
They had a copy of Dark Heresy which I scrambled for and purchased along with some dice. However I forgot that Dark Heresy and WFRP use d10s exclusively so I'll have to go back this weekend or something and get some more. They also had blank d10s.
I've been reading the rulebook all weekend and I've still got loads to go. There is so much stuff in this book! I'm getting pretty stoked about playing a Dark Heresy campaign now. You don't get much more grim and dark than the Warhammer 40,000 universe. I went through the character creation process with Sam and made a Guardsman (i.e. warrior type) character with him and explained some of the basic rules such as rolling to hit in combat, using skills, critical hit tables (oh my god my head just caught fire), and so on. He has expressed the wish to become a sniper type character, which is fine, but I get the feeling he'll probably just slip back into his Samulus the halfling rogue routine. Although he hasn't chosen a Scum (i.e. rogue/thief type) or Assassin (i.e. combat heavy thief/rogue type) character so perhaps I'm judging too quickly.
I've still got to prepare notes for the d20 modern bank robbery, and I spent a lot of Sunday writing up D&D notes properly from the previous campaign (I'll probably finish them tonight or tomorrow and post them here ASAP).
In other news I tried the demo of The Witcher and despite the cliche introduction of the hero has amnesia about his mysterious past and such, it looks to be a very interesting game. Perhaps it would be more interesting with a manual. So after I get Fallout 3 and play that to death, I think I'll buy the full version of The Witcher and give it a go.
