Server Farm

You know that old Hollywood sterotype of the computer geek who doesn't say much and seems awkward in conversation, rarely goes outside, lives underground, and listens to the deafening hum of a server farm all day? I think I found a brood of them.

This week I was given a tour of the server farm at the main offices. It's just what you would expect. Very cold, very noisy, and very short on space. There are server racks that stand as tall as the ceiling, bundles of cables lying across the floor, blinking lights, and fuzzy-looking monitors that can be used to remotely access any of the servers in the room.

I don't have access to the servers, as there is not going to be any reason for me to physically visit them, and at the moment there is no reason to visit them remotely either.

Some of the server guys down there were, unfortunately, just how you'd imagine them. Bearded, stand-offish, and more than a little reserved. One of my colleagues said that he has tried, several times, to wander down to their offices and spark up a conversation, only to be chased away each time.

I still haven't seen any polyhedral dice yet, which is a shame because I was hoping to find some new players and be able to jump into a tabletop RPG again. Maybe I should put a poster up "ADVENTURERS WANTED" or something.
